Sabarimala accident


Sabarimala is a Hindu pilgrimage center located in Western Ghat mountains Pathanamthitta District in Kerala. Sabarimala is considered the place where Ayyappan meditated after killing the powerful demon, Mahisha. Lord Ayyappan Temple is located here in the middle of 18 hills.The temple is situated on a hill at an altitude of 468 m above sea level and is surrounded by mountains and dense forests. Temples in each of the hills surrounding Sabarimala.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi have expressed their deep emotion and conveyed his condolences to the families of those killed in the Sabarimala staampede. The Prime Minister has sanctioned an ex gratia of Rs 1 lakh for the families of each victim and Rs 50,000 for Injured.President Pratibha Patil also expressed condolences on the death an accident took place near Sabarimala pilgrims.The Uppupara Vandiperiyar.

According to sources, took place shortly after 20:00, while pilgrims returning to attend the ceremony of Makara Jyoti. The Kerala Minister Dewasom, Kadannappalli Ramachandran, citing preliminary reports, said the chain of events was triggered by a jeep that broke on the way home from the temple. When the pilgrims tried to move the vehicle, which flipped over, crushing several people in the process. More vehicles were behind the jeep slipped and fell on the pilgrims, resulting in a stampede.
